Former Lami Town Council worker selling marijuana for beer money sentenced to 1 year imprisonment

The former Lami Town Council worker who was selling marijuana to buy his beer has been sentenced to 1 year imprisonment by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Marika Magita had pleaded guilty to the charges of being found to be in unlawful possession of illicit drugs and money suspected to be proceeds of crime.

During a Police patrol, Magita was seen with a group of youths at Tikaram Park in Lami and he was acting in a suspicious manner.

Police searched Magita under reasonable suspicion and he was found with 9 sachets of dried leaves wrapped in aluminium foil which was later confirmed to be marijuana.

He was also found with $186 which was confirmed to be proceeds of crime.

Magita had earlier told the court that he was using the money he earned from selling marijuana to buy his beer while his salary went towards buying groceries at home.

Magistrate Yogesh Prasad told Magita that selling drugs to youth for beer is an abhorrent act of selfishness and warrants an immediate custodial sentence.
