Labasa will host the 146th Girmit Commemoration Day this year.

The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh has confirmed that the event will be held from the 10th to 12th May at the Subrail Park in Labasa, with an additional event planned for 11th May in Savusavu.

Singh says preparatory work is currently being undertaken by the ministry in the areas of documenting Girmit stories, digitising historical records and creating a Girmit database, establish a Girmit Museum and organising a collection drive for Girmit-related artefacts and resources.

He says a Girmit working committee is being established, composed of key stakeholders from both public and private sectors in the North to oversee the program.
