The Labasa Chamber of Commerce said while the Interim Government is concentrating more in trying to revive the Northern economy by providing tax free zones to attract investors, it only adds more incentive to declare Malau a port of entry.
President, Ashok Karan said it is now the right time to declare Malau as the port of entry for the Northern Division as it will allow business people in North an easier excess to trade.
Karan adds that the expansion of Waiqele Airport should be another top priority.
In his Budget address on Friday, Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama stressed that the economically depressed Northern and Maritime Island region are in need of special consideration and assistance.
Commodore Bainimarama announced that the Northern Division will be established as tax free region effective from 1st January 2009.
