LTA cracks down on pirate taxis

Five vehicle owners have been given a final warning by the Land Transport Authority to not operate illegally.

LTA’s Chairman Vijay Maharaj says these warnings were issued this month.

He adds that LTA is impounding vehicles if they are found to be operating illegally.

Maharaj says they have witnessed several private vehicles and rental cars operating as taxis.

He adds that LTA has also issued 374 Traffic Infringement Notices for the month of December.

Maharaj says those vehicle owners and drivers found to be breeching the LTA Acts and Regulations will be called before the authority to show cause as to why their vehicle registration and drivers license should not be suspended or cancelled if they are found to be repeatedly offending.

Maharaj says the Authority has deployed more than 55 enforcement officers during this festive season.

He adds that apart from focusing on illegal operation, the enforcement officers will also focus on overloading and e-ticketing issues.
