The National Federation Party says the people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer are fellow citizens and they deserve the dignity and the respect offered to every member of our society.
In a message on International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, NFP Leader Professor Biman Prasad says the constitution gives all people an equal right to live in dignity and freedom from discrimination on the basis of religion, race, or sexual orientation.
Prasad says these rights and freedoms are also guaranteed under international law.
He says the haphazard approach to enforcing these rights and obligations on the rights of the LGBTIQ community is a cause for concern.
Prasad says the LGBTIQ community has suffered at the hands of often relentless prosecution.
The NFP Leader says Fiji still has a long way to go before we can fully realise the full acceptance of LGBTIQ in our communities.
