LA 7s: Fiji out of contention after 14-15 loss to Australia

The Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s HSBC SVNS World Championship campaign is over after losing their second pool match against Australia 15-14 this morning.

Fiji started off strong with a converted try to Terio Veilawa to lead 7-0, and Australia responded with a try to James Turner to close the gap to a 7-5 at halftime.

Before halftime, Fiji were down to 5 men after Veilawa and Sevuloni Mocenacagi were both shown yellow cards.

Australia started the second half with a bang, with Maurice Longbottom crossing the try line to put Australia in the lead.

Veilawa came back into the field and sparked some magic, scoring his second try to put Fiji in a 14-10 lead.

Silly mistakes and handling errors cost Fiji the game as Turner scored his second to put the Australians to a 15-14 lead with a minute left to go.

Fiji had the ball in the last minute, but the pass from Waisea Nacuqu did not connect with Manueli Maisamoa, giving the Australians the chance to kick the ball out.

Meanwhile, Fiji lost to New Zealand 17-12 in their first pool match.

Fiji’s last pool match is against Spain at 12.13pm today.

The semi finals are at 8.07am tomorrow, with the cup final at 12.07pm.
