Knowledge of traditional fishing in Fiji is under threat

The knowledge of traditional fishing practices in Fiji is under threat due to less information passed by family elders through their future generations

Through this, lack of knowledge has been identified within our youth and traditional knowledge should be documented as more youths have moved to urban areas to find employment and find a living for their families.

These were some of the major points highlighted during the Ocean Culture and Traditional Knowledge discussions at the Peninsula Hotel.

Through the discussions made by selected participants, another threat that they identify is that laws implemented by the Government have stopped fishing practices that also sends the message through their village members.

Also an important point that was raised was the sharing of indigenous stories of sustainable use of their resources to their younger family members.

The 35 participants later presented what they have learned from the 2 day event and the importance of documenting traditional fishing practice and print books to remind their future generations for the importance of their culture and sharing of ideas to other races around them.
