With 40 people currently needing ongoing kidney dialysis treatment, this procedure is one of the most expensive treatments in the world that even Fiji’s public health system cannot afford to offer it for free.
Kidney Foundation of Fiji Secretary Bernadette Rounds Ganilau said overseas health departments are heavily subsidized by their governments allowing them to offer the service for free but unfortunately people in Fiji do not have medical benefits but have to pay straight out of their pockets for treatment.
Kidney disease is usually an end stage to diabetes and hypertension however can also be hereditary.
Numbers have been reportedly increasing.
