Kepa still wants to call GCC meeting

Kepa still wants to call GCC meeting
The Leader of the Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa.

The Leader of the Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa maintains that she will try to organize a Great Council of Chiefs meeting although the council does not exist under the constitution.

Ro Teimumu says in her traditional capacity, she will now look into the option of calling the GCC to meet to discuss issues relating to land to be given to climate refugees.

Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has already said that the  Great Council of Chiefs will not be reinstated as the government believes in common and equal citizenry as stated in the constitution.

Bainimarama made this clear in parliament earlier this year as Opposition MP, Niko Nawaikula raised the question on whether Bainimarama will restore the GCC.

Bainimarama says the GCC was established by the British administration in 1875 and it is not an i-Taukei institution.

Opposition MP, Semesa Karavaki had then said the chiefs are from God and questioned the Prime Minister why he does not want to bring back the GCC.

The Prime Minister said the bible bashers are saying anything that would elevate the chiefs.
