The Education Ministry has reminded teachers that it is illegal to charge students money for breaking a school or class rule.

Education Minister Filipe Bole made the comments after concerns were raised by some parents of Kamil Muslim College in Ba that some school teachers are charging student’s money for speaking in vernacular during classes.

According to parents students are being charged as much as 20 cents for speaking in vernacular during classes.

Some students end up paying from their bus fare and they have to walk home after school.

Kamil Muslim College Vice Principle, Shirly Imraan has confirmed that some teachers have set up this rule themselves to improve English.
