Fiji Airways National Men’s 7s player Elia Canakaivata says it was a great opportunity for him to play for Fiji in the Rugby 7s World Cup because he always wanted to hold the Melrose Cup in his hands.

He says the last time Fiji won the Melrose Cup, he was in Class 4 and at that time he did not know what the competition was.

Canakaivata says, when they were told during training about the importance of the competition, he understood why there was a lot of hype on social media.

He adds seeing the fans at the Nadi Airport filled him with pride and joy that he has done something special for the nation.

The 26-year-old says he would like to continue to play rugby 7s for Fiji in the future.

17 years later, Ben Gollings and the most decorated 7s player in the world, Jerry Tuwai and captain, Waisea Nacuqu brought back the Melrose Cup.

The Fijiana 7s team who have had their best finish at 5th place in the World Cup were also on the same flight.

We are currently awaiting the announcement of the national 7s celebration.
