It is important to ensure that the authenticity of traditional art is maintained and protected while continuing to encourage contemporary art in Fiji.

This was highlighted by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere while opening the Savusavu Art and Fashion Week at Daku Resort.

The President says as a Patron of the Fiji Arts Council he must champion the protection of skilled artisans and local art at its highest level.

Ratu Wiliame says the fashion week offers Savusavu-based artists a platform for their work as many Savusavu artists have many years’ worth of work that is already recognized outside of Savusavu.

He says the north is an untapped market for both traditional and contemporary art.

The event organized by The Fiji Arts Council and Daku Resort will showcase the work of 13 artists, seven of whom are from Suva while the rest are from Savusavu.

The exhibition will conclude on Friday.
