New and innovative ways need to be explored as most countries only benchmark themselves on Civil and Political Rights when discussing Human Rights indicating a disparity in the two spheres of human rights.
This was highlighted by the Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum while delivering his opening remarks at the Regional Workshop on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and Human Rights Indicators in Nadi.
Sayed-Khaiyum says this needs to be expanded to include Socio‑economic Rights which is something that is included in the Fijian Constitution.
He says in the Fijian Constitution, you will find a whole prethora of not only just civil and political rights but also for the first time socio‑economic rights which mirrors the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
The Attorney General says it is important that Human Rights must be applied to everyone equally.
The Workshop which was attended by 30 senior government officials from various ministries from the regional countries aimed to begin and create a platform for advancing the Economic, Social, Cultural Right and Human Rights Indicators.
