Irish galloper Vauban is poised to run favourite in today's Melbourne Cup race, but there's been continued strong support for his stablemate Absurde.

The ABC reports that last year's winner Gold Trip and Caulfield Cup hero Without A Fight will fly the flag for the Australian-trained runners.

Meanwhile, there's a nervous wait for retiring jockey Damien Oliver whose final Cup mount Alenquer is under a fitness cloud.

The Melbourne Cup race starts at 4pm today.
