Inmate finds new purpose through painting, acknowledges Yellow Ribbon Program

As the Yellow Ribbon Program continues, inmate Anil Chand says painting has given him a new mindset and a renewed sense of purpose.

Speaking to fijivillage News from the Suva Corrections facility, Chand, who is serving time for attempted murder says the creative process helps him stay focused and positively engaged.

He thanked the Fiji Corrections Service for giving him an opportunity to showcase his artwork for the first time during the Yellow Ribbon event in Nausori.

Chand says this is his first time participating in the program.

When asked how the Corrections system helped him cope with his situation, he says his world changed completely the day he was sentenced to prison.

Chand says being sentenced felt like his world had collapsed.

He was lost but a few months into his sentence, he noticed other inmates painting and he was inspired as well.

Chand asked his family to bring him pencils, and that’s how he realised that he has got a second chance.
