Feminist and climate activist Maria Nailevu

Feminist and climate activist Maria Nailevu has shared her story about how she grew up to be proud of her identity.

While speaking at the Fiji NGO Coalition Human Rights Day Picnic at the Park at My Suva Park, Nailevu says she grew up not being proud of her identity because of the stigma and perception that exists in society.

She says when she wanted to attend a particular school, her mother and others did not recommend it because they thought she would be a lesbian.

Nailevu says this did not deter her as she was proud of her identity.

She says this is a long journey and a lot of things will not be achieved overnight but violence is everyone’s business.

Nailevu says everyone needs to play a role in this movement.
