Housing Ministry to conduct survey to identify potential home-owners living in informal settlements

The Ministry of Housing is looking to conduct surveys to better understand the backgrounds of people living in informal settlements and aiming to identify those who can afford to buy land and housing.

Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa told fijivillage News that the survey will provide insights into the demographics and employment status of all the residents.

He says not everyone in these settlements is in financial need, as some are civil servants and bank officers who can secure housing.

He adds the survey is part of a broader review of the 2011 National Housing Policy, which also aims to ensure that government support is directed to those who need it the most, while providing opportunities for those able to transition into formal housing.

He says with this data, the Ministry aims to implement targeted reforms to improve living conditions and support economic growth.
