People in the Western division are advised to take all precautionary measures as there are clear signs now that heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue in the west today and tomorrow.
The Nadi Weather Office said heavy rain is expected in Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Labasa and Savusavu.
Flooding of low lying areas is expected.
Commissioner Western, Colonel Joeli Cawaki said many areas from Sigatoka to Rakiraki have been affected by continuous rain and river flooding.
Nadi town is now like an island surrounded by water.
District Officer Peni Koro said the town is now being monitored by police and they are not allowing people into the town.
A number of residents spent their night sitting on the sofa in their homes waiting for dawn in Vuniyasi Nadi where more than 30 houses are under flood waters.
A resident Shaizad Beg said this is one of the worst floods they have experienced and waters have started to increase with the high tide coming in this morning.
He said a number of items have been destroyed including the books and stationary that was purchased for the new school year.
Another resident Nasir Ali who has been living in the area for 25 years said this is one of the worst floods he has experienced.
He said ten families are taking shelter at their neighbors house.
In Navokai Nadi people who had built their houses on higher grounds after the 2009 flood are surrounded by flood waters.
A resident Surila said more than 40 houses in their area is under 6 feet flood water and while a number of them managed to move to higher grounds they are still in their top flats hoping that the flood waters will recede.
