Give access to taxis carrying passengers to Denarau - Ministry of Justice

The Ministry of Justice has made a recommendation to the Ministry of Transport that any person hiring a taxi that is not based at Denarau for carrying passengers onto any property in Denarau must be given full access to drop off passengers at any point within the island.

The Ministry states in the Land Transport Industry Report that numerous complaints have been raised by individuals regarding taxi access into Denarau.

It says that while Denarau is a private island, the utility services are still provided by the government.

The Ministry of Justice also says that given that Denarau is also an important tourist destination, as a country, we must ensure that the product value is not diminished and the tourists are not in any way disadvantaged.

The Ministry highlights that arbitrary acts taken by security guards and other personnel in Denarau have diminished the product value of the island.

It gave examples where tourists who have hired taxis from outside the island were forced to get off at the security gates as access was not granted to the taxis.

The report also says that a number of taxis based on Denarau island operate as hire vehicles and charge unreasonable fares from Denarau to Nadi Town.
