The Girmit Day commemoration at the Girmit Multicultural Centre in Lautoka will feature thrilling sports competitions such as soccer, netball and golf, further enriching the experience for attendees.

The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs says the soccer competition is organised by the Sanatan Dharam Pratanidhi Sabha of Fiji.

They say the Girmit Tournament Soccer and Netball competition will take place at Nadovu Park in Lautoka, adjacent to the Girmit Multicultural Centre, from Saturday to Monday at 10am and will be officiated by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru.

The Ministry further says the Girmit Open Golf Tournament will showcase top talent and honour Girmitiya golfers worldwide which will take place at the Fiji Golf Club in Suva.

The competition will feature Fiji's professional golfers alongside over 130 amateur golfers across Fiji showcasing their skills with a cash prize of $20,000 for professional golfers and a prize pool of $8,000 for amateurs, sponsored by Extra Supermarket and the Fiji Professional Golf Association.

The Ministry says this significant event marks the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India to Fiji under British Colonial Rule on May 14th, 1879.

The Girmit celebration will be held from Saturday to Monday.
