Importing fuel has so far cost Fiji $1.2 billion in the last year and to reduce these costs, alternatives like bio-fuel will now be looked at.
Energy Department Director Bio-fuel Iferemi Dau said the transport sector consumes the greatest proportion of total energy at 40% and this can be reduced if steps are taken to look at bio-fuel alternatives.
Dau said they are holding talks with LTA on the matter.
Officials from the Energy Department said fuel imports figures show that in 2006, $1.2 billion worth of fuel was brought in, as for 2007 it was $99.7 million.
