Former national football team captain, George Koi has passed away.

Koi died at his home in Nasinu yesterday.

The highlight of his career was in 1977, when he captained the national team that defeated Australia 1-0 at Buckhurst Park and also helped Rewa win the IDC in 1972.

He played together with Jimmy Okete, Vula Wate, Anand Sami, late Joasaia Tubuna, late Akariva Rasumu, Hussein Saheb, John Grey, Madhavan, Tevita Delana, Mun Lal and John Monday.

Fiji FA President, Rajesh Patel has acknowledged the supreme contribution by Koi in the football arena.

He says it is a huge loss as Koi had been a great footballer and an inspirational leader of his time.

Former Tavua, Rewa, Nasinu and national midfielder Ronald Chaudhary adds that Koi attained a lot of respect amongst his teammates.

Chaudhary says coming from a military background, Koi had discipline and leadership qualities, and this made it easy for the management to select him as skipper.
