Former Water Authority of Fiji engineer, Mohammed Shafraaz Ali has been convicted of bribery and sentenced to 18 months with a non-parole period of 12 months.

Ali was sentenced by Magistrate Jeremaia Savou last Friday.

The court found that between 1st of March 2017 and 30th of June 2017, while employed at WAF as Regional Engineer Bulk, Ali accepted an advantage in the form of a Fiji Airways return air ticket to Sydney, Australia worth $1430.60.

The ticket was paid for on March 21, 2017, by Sphynx Solutions Pte Limited on account of Ali performing an act in his capacity as a public servant.

Ali has also been fined $3,000.

Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 300 days being added to his custodial sentence.

He has been granted 28 days to appeal the conviction and/or sentence.
