Former Acting Deputy Official Receiver appeals his sentence of 23 years

Former Acting Deputy Official Receiver Viliame Katia who was imprisoned for corruption-related offences is appealing his 23-year sentence.

Katia appeared before Fiji Court of Appeal Judge Justice Chandana Premati-laka today.

The court was asked for time to file the submissions for appeal.

Katia was convicted of three counts of abuse of office for gain, four counts of forgery, one count of embezzlement, one count of giving false information to a public servant, one count of unauthorized modification of data and one count of obtaining financial advantage.

The total amount involved was $4.1 million.

Katia is serving 23 years in prison with a non-parole of 22 years.

The case has been adjourned to 31st August.
