The Vodafone Fiji 7s team has started strongly in the Oceania 7s tournament after thrashing American Samoa 52-0 in their opening match at the ANZ Stadium in the last hour.

The Olympic champions scored eight tries to win their first match since the Rio Olympics 7s final.

Fiji led 26-0 at half time after a hatrick to Nacanieli Labalaba from the Malolo Rugby team.

Olympian Kitione Taliga scored the fourth try for Fiji in the first half.

Fiji’s fifth try was scored by another Olympian Samisoni Viriviri at the start of the second half and this was soon followed by a double by Kalioni Nasoko from Yasawa.

Uluinakau player Setareki Bituniyata scored Fiji’s final try in the match.

The new players look good on attack and defence, and many fans are now waiting to see on how they will perform against teams like Tonga, Samoa and Australia in the tournament.

Captain Osea Kolinisau says they need to improve in a few areas.

He has also called on fans to come out in numbers to support the Fiji side.

The Vodafone Fiji 7s will take on PNG at 2.12pm today, Fiji will then face Nauru at 4.39pm before facing Tonga at 7.27 tonight.

The main eliminations start at 1.52pm tomorrow, the Cup Semi Finals kick off at 2.34pm and the Cup Final will start at 7.08pm tomorrow.
