An atmosphere of unity and patriotism was evident at Suva’s Albert Park this morning as Fijians from all walks of life gathered in blue and white to celebrate Fiji Day.
President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama officiated at the event where a 21-gun salute was given and the national anthem was sung by all.
Some members of the public we spoke to said they were happy to celebrate our 43rd year of independence.
Meanwhile, an 86-year-old man who was part of the parade at Albert Park on October 10th in 1970 said witnessing today’s event brings back great memories.
William Sorby who is the chairman of the Fiji Ex-servicemen After Care said he is very happy and humbled to have been part of that historic moment.
William Sorby said there is now unity in the country compared to the past.
Fiji Day celebrations were also held in Levuka and Nausori earlier today.
