Fijian disability groups come together for a Christmas celebration of inclusivity

Christmas has come early for Fijian disability groups as they gathered today at the German Embassy to promote greater inclusivity and equality for persons with disabilities.

The event brought together individuals with disabilities, including representatives from the Psychiatric Survivors Association, United Blind Persons Fiji, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, the Fiji Association for the Deaf, and the Spinal Injury Association.

While speaking at the event, German Ambassador, Dr. Andreas Prothmann says it is not just a lunch, but it is an opportunity for all to connect, to exchange ideas and to reflect on how they can work together to make Fiji and the world a more inclusive place for persons with disabilities.

He says when they extended this invitation to the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, it was with the intent to open a door.

He further says they wanted to emphasise that the German mission in Fiji is not just a diplomatic mission, but a partner willing to listen, understand, and hopefully collaborate in the future.

Prothmann says Germany has long committed to promote the dignity and the rights of persons with disabilities.

He says they recognise that in Fiji and many other countries, all face challenges in removing barriers, whether physical, societal, or systemic.

He adds that the work the National Council does to address these barriers is invaluable, not just for those who are directly affected, but for the entire community.

In an interview with fijivillage News, while speaking on behalf of the Spinal Injury Association, 25-year-old Nafitalai Bai says they are very appreciative of the invite that has been given, and it is just fitting that because this week they have also been celebrating International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

He says they find that this is a good time to collaborate with the German Embassy in terms of support for organisations for persons with disabilities and with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities at the help from the government side of persons with disabilities.

Bai says they are very fortunate enough to have this invitation for this lunch.
