FijiFirst raises concern over Electoral Commission’s lack of ability to address issues
FijiFirst General Secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

The FijiFirst has come out today and raised serious concerns about the Electoral Commission’s lack of ability to address issues like the vandalising and stoning of FijiFirst vehicles over the past few weeks.

FijiFirst General Secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said some of their supporters who have the FijiFirst stickers on their vehicles have been intimidated by members of the public and some law enforcement officers.

Sayed-Khaiyum said some of the vehicles have graffiti and swear words written on the stickers.

Other things written on the cars include people told to vote for other parties.

The FijiFirst General Secretary said some Land Transport Authority and Police officers are also intimidating their supporters.

Sayed-Khaiyum revealed that some reports have been filed with the Police and LTA.

He said some of the supporters now want the stickers off their vehicles.

Sayed-Khaiyum said the Electoral Commission needs to reassure members of the public that no one should be intimidated for supporting a particular party.

The FijiFirst said the Electoral Commission should speak out against these incidents and take a proactive approach.

He also questions what the commission is doing about party posters being put up in non-designated areas.

Sayed-Khaiyum said a party poster is on a bus stop in Sigatoka which is clearly not in a designated public place.

He said the Electoral Commission is not saying anything on this.

The FijiFirst General Secretary said he has spoken to the Electoral Commission Chairman, Chen Bunn Young about this issue.

We have been trying to speak to Young about this issue.

He is yet to comment.
