The Fiji women’s team will face Papua New Guinea in the FIBA Melanesian Cup final at 5pm today.

Fiji held out a fast-finishing Papua New Guinea in the gold medal preview, 65-54 last night.

Fiji Captain, Kayla Mendez says the girls anticipated a tough match against the defending champions.

She says they knew coming into this game it was going to be a battle, the full thirty minutes, and that is what it was.

She adds they did not let up and it was really tough to guard them, their guards are scrappy and hard to defend, they are fit, and they run the floor.

Mendez adds their mindset coming in was knowing it would be a battle.

New Caledonia and Solomon Islands will be fighting it out for the bronze medal at 12pm today.

The Fiji men's basketball team hope was defeated after being thrashed by the beaten champions Papua New Guinea 70-61.

In the other men's game New Caledonia thrashed Solomon Islands 98-38

In the men’s finals PNG will take on New Caledonia for the gold medal at 7.30pm while Fiji will battle it out for the bronze medal against Solomon Islands at 2.30pm.
