The Fiji Airways Men's National 7s team has won the Oceania 7s after defeating New Zealand 17-7 tonight.
New Zealand needed to win by 35 point margin to claim the title while Fiji only needed a win or a draw.
Fiji started the match with some scrappy play but got the rythm right in the 3rd minute where captain Jerry Tuwai shifted the ball from a lineout to Jiuta Wainiqolo who ran in for their first try.
Upcoming star, Sireli Maqala showed some good footwork and broke the New Zealand defence from their own 22 metre line, but was taken down deep inside the opponents territory.
Iosefo Masi did a good follow up, picked the ball and dived over to score to give Fiji a 12-0 lead at the break.
Fiji came firing in the second half with Meli Derenalagi crossing over for Fiji's third and final try.
Kurt Baker scored the only try for New Zealand.
Speaking after Fiji's victory, Coach Gareth Baber revealed the team that will head to the Olympics will be named at the end of this week.
Baber says there are a lot of potential out there but what this group has achieved is just spectacular.
In another match, Australia beat the Oceania 7s team 28-12.
