The last time the Digicel Fiji 7s team won in a World Series 7s tournament was in Wellington last year.
Vice-captain Osea Kolinisau said the loss to New Zealand by 28-5 in pool play reassured them to do better to beat them in the finals by 26-12.
He added they will enjoy the moment, but will have to lift their preparation leading to the next series.
Assistant Digicel Fiji 7s coach, Etuate Waqa said that to win on his first assignment in his new position in the team is an achievement, not only for the team but for Fiji as a whole.
Meanwhile, New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens said they committed a lot of mistakes that contributed to the loss.
In other results, Wales defeated Samoa 26-15 in the Plate final, Argentina beat Scotland 17-14 to lift the Bowl title and Papua New Guinea beat Japan 31-19 in the Shield final.
Fiji will now prepare for the next leg in Dubai this weekend and they are in Pool A with Argentina, United Arab Emirates and Samoa.
