Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has announced at the 71st United Nations General Assembly that Fiji is in the process of re‑evaluating its relationships with the rest of the world.

While speaking in New York earlier today, Bainimarama says while Fiji is certainly not in the business of making enemies, the country intends to align itself more closely with those countries that share Fiji’s values and principles.

Bainimarama says this change of direction will not be sudden and will not produce a dramatic change in the international company that Fiji keeps.

But he stressed that Fiji will definitely seek closer relations with nations that share Fiji’s values and basic outlook.

He says these relations will be with nations that respect human life and the rights and dignity of their citizens, adhere to the principle of social justice, uphold the rule of law and insist on equality and respect for all human beings.

Bainimarama says Fiji will also place trade at the centre of its foreign policy effort, and promote the impressive collection of quality products and services under the Fijian Made brand.

The Prime Minister says that Fiji is also seeking membership of the UN Human Rights Council for the two‑year term that commences in 2018.

Bainimarama says that we would be the first Pacific nation to serve on the Council and he asked UN member states to support Fiji’s bid.

The Prime Minister also says that Fiji has overcome many challenges to become one nation.

He also called on world leaders to reduce carbon emissions.

Bainimarama said that this is a special moment for Fiji as Peter Thomson assumed the Presidency of the 71st session of the General Assembly – the first Fijian and the first Pacific Islander to attain this high office at the UN.
