Fiji has called on the UN Security Councils to lead and support national and regional efforts to tackle growing security challenges related to climate change.

While speaking a the addressing the UN Security Council on climate related disasters, Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that the effects of climate change which maybe now be more pronounced in some places over others will none the less be a problem that will ultimately affect each part of the world.

He stressed that the open debate at the UN Security Council on the defining challenges of our times is preparing the international community to confront the growing security consequences arising from climate change induced natural disasters.

Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that extreme weather patterns make our economies and societies’ more fragile as seen time and time again that when economic and social fragility increase our institutions suffer.

Sayed-Khaiyum says that Fiji is still in a phase where relocations of coastal communities both domestically and between countries can be managed voluntarily as Fiji has offered support to host some of our neighbours.

However, Sayed-Khaiyum stressed that very soon these will become forced migrations on a scale that will place severe stresses on our societies and international arrangements.
