After a three-year wait, the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens has returned and the action and atmosphere did not disappoint as Fiji started in brilliant form decimating Japan 59-12 in their first pool game.

The Fiji Airways Men's National 7s team aims to top it's pool, and their goal is to beat their remaining pool opponents USA and Spain today.

Fiji plays Spain at 4.15pm this afternoon and later face USA at 8pm tonight.

The 5 years in a row winners of the Hong Kong 7s will face stiff competition from a few others hunting for the title.

Wanting to lay down a marker as defending World Series champions, Australia ruthlessly put away Hong Kong in the final match of the day but they weren’t the only side to impress.

Samoa’s 24-0 win over New Zealand, also in Pool A, marked them down as serious contenders.

As the first of 11 tournaments, Hong Kong is not only the launchpad for this season’s World Series but also for Olympic qualification, with the top four teams at the end of the season snapping up automatic tickets to Paris 2024.

The Hong Kong 7s cup quarterfinals will begin at 3.25pm tomorrow, the cup semifinals will begin at 7.45pm tomorrow and the cup final will kick off at 11pm tomorrow.
