Fiji Taxi Association wants to be represented on LTA board

The Fiji Taxi Association wants to be represented in the Land Transport Authority board.

While the association has welcomed the recommendation made by the Ministry of Justice and Anti-Corruption on the LTA industry report, Fiji Taxi Association General Secretary Rishi Ram says since the establishment of LTA they have never been represented in the LTA board.

Ram says the association is hoping that the report on the LTA industry will bring some needed changes.

He says government should conduct a feasibility study to determine if there is a need to offer more PSV licenses for taxis.

Ram says they should also be included in the Review Committee.

One of the major recommendations made by the Ministry of Justice and Anti-Corruption in the report on the LTA industry is that the current membership of the Land Transport Authority Board needs to be replaced.

A number of complaints were made against the LTA Board, in particular the composition, meetings and processes of the Board.

The Ministry has also recommended in the report on the LTA industry that before the freeze on the issuance of new PSV licenses is lifted, the Review Committee should determine based on transparent and scientific basis, the number of PSV licenses that should be issued for each locality.

It says once the number of taxi and minibus licenses are determined, new licenses should be issued to those Fijians who are from a low‑income background.
