A body search on a convicted prisoner from Naboro Maximum Corrections Centre has resulted in the Fiji Corrections Service Emergency Control Unit finding a sachet of methamphetamine, marijuana, suki (Fijian tobacco) and a mobile phone.

The prisoner was caught red handed yesterday trying to smuggle the illicit drugs and a mobile phone whilst returning from a court hearing in Suva.

These illegal items were found after a thorough rub down and strip search.

The Fiji Corrections Service says despite the awareness in the media recently on the challenges faced by them in dealing with smuggling of illegal contraband items into the centre and the possible consequences that would arise for prisoners health and disciplinary actions to follow, this warning continues to fall on deaf ears to a minority of prisoners who have been aided and abetted by certain elements of the general public.

Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Senior Superintendent Apimeleki Taukei says convict and remand prisoners alike go to extreme lengths and undertake huge risks in their attempts to smuggle these illegal items into the Correction Centres.

Taukei says sadly, after all attempts to educate these prisoners and the public on the consequences of these illegal actions they continue to try and push the boundaries of the law thinking they won’t be caught.

Taukei calls on the support of families, friends and the general public to do the right thing to support the Fiji Corrections Service in the rehabilitating of prisoners.

The illegal contraband items have since being taken into the possession of the Fiji Police Force who have begun their investigation into the matter.
