The Fiji Trades Union Congress says it is continuing negotiations with the management of Vatukoula Gold Mine in relation to issues raised by workers about their working conditions.

FTUC National Secretary Felix Anthony says there have been recent fatalities recorded at the mine as well as four electrocution cases and the workers are concerned about their hot working conditions.

He says they are at the negotiation stage in this dispute and they want to come to the discussion table so that the issues the workers are concerned about can be amicably resolved.

Anthony also says that Police have no role in this dispute as it is between the workers and the management.

Divisional Police Commander West SSP Verani Nakauyaca says they were called to the work area last Wednesday after information that some workers had threatened to walk off their jobs.

Nakauyaca says this has been their only role in this situation.

He is unable to confirm who called police last Wednesday.

Vatukoula Gold Mines Limited says efforts are being made to address workers’ concerns about hot working conditions in the mines.

The Corporate Services Manager and Special Adviser to the General Manager Vatukoula Gold Mines Limited, Dinny Laufenboeck says they they are ensuring that everyone’s voices are heard.

She also says four employees had received a low voltage shock and cases are being investigated.

Laufenboeck says they did not call Police last Wednesday.
