Former Vodafone Fiji 7's coach Ben Ryan

The Fiji Rugby Union has expressed its disappointment at former Vodafone Fiji 7's coach Ben Ryan's constant remarks about the Fiji 7s team and his ongoing tweets about the performance of the team.

Fiji Rugby Union CEO John O'Connor says while they appreciate Ben Ryan's contribution to Fiji Rugby and the success they have achieved through his leadership of the 7s Team, he has chosen to move on to other challenges which FRU respects and all have accepted but it seems it is difficult for him to move on.

O'Connor has stated that there is no truth in Ryan's comments that FRU has lost its sponsorship and funding.

He says there has been ongoing discussions with the Fiji National Sports Commission and their sponsors in relation to the contracting of our 7s players.

O'Connor adds all the players that were selected for the first leg of the World Rugby Series revolved around Ben Ryan's extended squad.

He says that the players employment contracts with FRU expired after the Olympics and they have all been paid their relevant allowances while in camp and while on tour for the two tournaments.

O'Connor also highlighted that Gareth Baber will commence duty on the 2nd of next month.

He believes it is only fair that Baber watches our local competitions and selects his own team and the FRU intends to work with Baber in contracting the selected extended squad for 2017 and beyond.

Ben Ryan had tweeted yesterday quote "A fantastic effort by Fiji at the series. FRU - please start paying these amazing men. No one contracted again".

He then tweeted "Post Rio - team have lost sponsors and funding. Crazy and time Fiji 7s allowed to be franchised".

Ryan again tweeted after the FRU's statement. His tweet read "What a ridiculously childish statement. I've only said positive things about everyone and one tweet that tells the truth hits a chord".

He then tweeted quote Athe players and coaches in last two tournaments were excellent. Hard when not being paid though".

Ryan also tweeted "Ps @fijirugby If you want me to step back perhaps you should extend the gesture and remove my photo from your top banner on your website".

FRU has stated that the players have been paid all their allowances and the contracts will start after Gareth Baber selects the players next week.
