Two areas in Viti Levu faced power cuts from late yesterday after excavation works and a fire in two separate incidents.
Excavation works in the Nasese area caused a power blackout in parts of Nasese and along Queen Elizabeth Drive from about 9pm last night.
FEA says their teams have established that the underground power cable supplying the affected area had been damaged during the excavation works by a third party.
The faulty underground cable was isolated and the power supply to majority of the affected customers was normalized at around midnight last night.
FEA is requesting members of the public to verify the presence of underground assets before carrying out any excavation works.
A “Permit to Dig” is required for any excavations in the vicinity of FEA power cables.
Meanwhile, one of the FEA power poles that transports power supply through the Tavua Substation to Rakiraki, got burnt yesterday afternoon.
FEA says they were replacing the burnt pole last night.
This required power to be switched off on the affected line for safety reasons.
During the repairs, people from Rabulu to Korovou in Tavua were without power supply.
People are requested not to burn cane or rubbish near the FEA power poles. It is also dangerous to throw lit cigarettes around exposed areas where power poles are located.
FEA says anyone caught causing damages to the power poles as a result of a fire will be charged according to the law.
