Essential elements of democracy are respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections.

This was highlighted by the Acting Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa while inaugurating the Elections Disability Access Working Group (EDAWG) workshop which aims to develop a comprehensive four-year work plan for achieving more inclusive elections.

Mataiciwa says participation rights are important in empowering individuals and groups, which is essential to eliminate marginalization and discrimination.

She says elections should be as inclusive as possible, for voters and candidates as an inclusive election process is also one that is based on open and broad consultation with stakeholders.

The Acting SOE says the workshop is a hallmark of what is needed to ensure that the next General Election has a greater level of participation and inclusion, therefore we must all work together in improving support services for Fijian voters with disabilities.

She also reiterated to the FEO officials to activate their humility spirit and be humble to accept positive criticism and feedback
