Electoral Commission focused on delivering credible elections
The Electoral Commission is now focused on delivering credible elections before September this year.

Following their first meeting after a briefing by the Attorney General and Minister for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Chen Bunn Young said some of the immediate issues being looked at is the appointment of the Supervisor of Elections, staffing and funding.

Young said the Electoral Commission has a constitutional role to play in the appointment of the Supervisor of Elections however he says he cannot say when the appointment will be made.

Under the constitution, the Supervisor of Elections will be appointed by the President after consultations between the Constitutional Offices Commission and the Electoral Commission.

The Attorney General said they want the Electoral Commission to be totally independent when the electoral laws are in place.
