Education Ministry aims for parents not to buy textbooks by 2020
Minister for Education Rosy Akbar

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar says that by 2020, they will ensure that parents do not get a book list from schools where it states that they have to buy text books.

This is after Fijivillage had highlighted the issue of two parents being issued book lists with names of text books in it.

Following this, many other parents had raised concern with us that they were also asked to purchase text books this year.

The Permanent Secretary for Education had earlier said that these parents could return the text books to the bookshops.

Akbar says it is not easy to get a refund from a bookshop but she will have to have a word with the Permanent Secretary so that the ministry can refund the parents if it can.

She says that no parent should be buying any text books for their child.

Akbar has confirmed receiving complaints from parents but parents  are to ensure that they do not buy any text books.

She adds that the ministry is going to make sure that heads of schools actually comply with the ministerial directive.
