Early morning service held to remember fallen soldiers

Early morning service held to remember fallen soldiers
Today is Remembrance Day as we remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The day started with a dawn service for some in Suva today.

It was an emotional moment for 65 year old ex serviceman, Satini Bavolo as he took time out this morning to remember the soldiers who have given their lives for their country.

Bavolo was one of the 40 people who gathered at the military cemetery in Suva for the Remembrance Day dawn service.

Bavolo said the occasion brings back memories of an incident where he lost one of his fellow comrades in Lebanon.

Acting Police Commissioner Ravi Narayan and RFMF Chief of Staff Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz were also present at the Remembrance Day service this morning.

Remembrance Day is observed on 11th November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918.

Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,”.

Meanwhile Queen Elizabeth II led Britain's annual Remembrance Day service today - decades after the British monarch served in the Second World War.

The 87 year old queen is the last surviving head of state who served in uniform during the Second World War and remains the only female member of the royal family to have entered the armed forces.

Her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have since followed her in her footsteps.
