The Environment and Climate Adaptation Levy Amendment Bill which will ensure that the levy is also paid for new or used non‑hybrid vehicles has been passed in parliament.

While making his submission on the bill Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate says it is important to encourage the people of Fiji to move towards the use of vehicles that are more energy efficient and that use renewable energy forms.

Usamate also says it will also contribute to the ease of congestion on our roads as more people will be travelling in public transportation.

Meanwhile Minister for Environment Doctor Mahendra Reddy says these tax policies are to change people’s behavior and we need to behave responsibly to protect our natural resources and environment.

Minister for Health Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete also says the need to support ECAL is to protect our environment for food security, protect our oceans and foreshore.

Waqainabete says when we are protecting the environment, we are protecting the health of the people.
