It is a moment of joy for 18-year-old Liwai Roko Kabuyawa Duguca who becomes the first in his family to enter university for higher education.

Duguca hails from Waica Village in Taveuni, and is set to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the Fiji National University’s, College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF).

He says this is not just marking a milestone that signifies his personal ambition but also highlights the transformative power of education in the heart of Fiji's rural communities.

The former Holy Cross College student wants to follow his father Nilesh Chand’s foot steps as he spent his childhood surrounded by the nature of farming.

He says he wants to learn more about how to improve the farming techniques and help his community.

The 18-year-old says his parents have long sacrificed to provide for their family and now he is determined to see them reap the benefits through him.

Enrollment for Semester 1, 2025 is underway at FNU and will close on the 14th of February.
