Dr Mitchell to meet with IAAF

The mediator to resolve the dispute in Athletics Fiji, Doctor Robin Mitchell is expected to meet the International Association of Athletics Federations soon.

Two groups are claiming that they are the official body representing Athletics Fiji.

Following this dispute, National Sports Commission funds to Athletics Fiji have been frozen.

The international athletics body, IAAF is concerned about this situation and has asked Doctor Mitchell to assist.

Doctor Mitchell confirmed that IAAF asked him during the Winter Olympics to see whether he could help bring the two factions of Athletics Fiji together and work towards an Annual General Meeting which hopefully would result in a unified Athletics Fiji.

Although the faction led by Albert Miller is saying that they do not recognize Doctor Mitchell as a mediator, Fijivillage has been shown a letter from IAAF confirming that the international athletics body has asked Dr Robin Mitchell to assist it in its investigation of the Athletics situation in Fiji.

In the letter, it is stated that it is clear that the situation in Fiji is now a critical one and that an early resolution to the conflict has to be found if the sport is to move forward in unity.

Doctor Mitchell said he does not know why Miller’s group boycotted the AGM which was organised by him.

He said there is a conclusion that the 2008 Constitution is the valid constitution of Athletics Fiji.

He said the AGM was held on the 29th of March based on the requirement of the 2008 Athletics Fiji constitution that an AGM must be held before the 30th of March.

Doctor Mitchell said it is not very good for the development of Athletics and for the athletes in particular that the administration of Athletics Fiji has two factions.

He said no decision has been taken regarding the recognition of one or other group.

Doctor Mitchell said this will be done after the meeting with IAAF where he will present his report on the AGM.

None of the Athletics Fiji body recognised at the moment-FASANOC

FASANOC President, Reg Sanday has confirmed that they do not recognize any Athletics Fiji body at the moment.

Fijivillage has raised the question on the effects it is having on our athletes with the Youth Olympics in August this year, the Pacific Games in PNG next year and the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Sanday said FASANOC is now dealing directly with the athletes when it comes to preparations for upcoming competitions.
