As Indo-Fijians across the country begin preparations for Diwali, Sanatan Shiv Mandir priest, Dharmend Sharma has reminded the public of the deeper meaning behind Diwali, describing it as a celebration of light, unity and compassion.

While speaking to fijivillage News about the spiritual significance of the Festival of Lights, Sharma says it is a five-day celebration and a truly beautiful occasion.

He says that on Diwali, people light diyas in their homes and worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, the deities of wealth.

Sharma highlighted that in Fiji, Diwali is celebrated in a grand and colourful manner, with people decorating their homes and coming together as a community.

He says everyone joins in, with iTaukei and Muslim families also visiting the homes of Indo-Fijians to celebrate with them.

He adds that beyond lights and sweets, Diwali is a time to strengthen bonds and uplift one another as a community.

Sharma urged people to celebrate with unity and compassion, adding that if someone has lost a loved one, they should be offered sweets and be included in the celebrations so they do not feel left out.

Diwali will be celebrated next Tuesday.
