Develop leadership skills in prefects-Bole

The Education Minister has called on Principals and Head Teachers of Secondary and Primary Schools to develop their prefect’s leadership skills to avoid abuse of authority.

Minister Filipe Bole made this comment following the charging of a High school student by police for allegedly assaulting his younger peers.

Fijivillage News has been informed that the senior student who is from a prominent boarding school in Tailevu, is a House Captain and was allegedly assaulting junior students.

The parents of one of the junior students he allegedly assaulted have taken their child out of the school as he had to be taken to hospital.

The matter is now before the Police.

We have received information that the House Captain is now being investigated for assaulting about 40 students.

Bole said the school heads should ensure that prefects are effectively oriented into their new role.

He further added that as a prefect, a student is expected to act with maturity and work to preserve the school culture and to ensure that pupils conduct themselves in an orderly and appropriate fashion.

Bole stressed that prefects must never be allowed to abuse their positions and if any prefect is found in breach of any regulations of the school, they must be counseled and their powers removed if no improvement is seen in them.
