“I'm voting for my children’s future”

These are the words of Delailasakau villager Demesio Vakacebeivalu after casting his vote in Delalaisakau Village as pre-polling commenced in parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and some outer islands yesterday.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Vakacebeivalu said he is happy that after a long time he was able to have his say on who he believes should form the next government.

The 36-year-old who is a father of four added he has voted for the party which he believes will benefit his children in the future.

Vakacebeivalu who is also the Turaga ni Koro of Delailasakau village said village members are happy and they have been eagerly waiting for this day to cast their vote.

Village headman Iakobo Kurudauudua said it was a joy to see the voting process conducted for the first time in their village with registered voters lining up to vote while others were just there to witness the process as it happened.

Pre-polling continues today in parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lomaiviti, Lau and the Eastern Division.

66,048 voters are expected to cast their vote during the pre-polling period.

Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem said most of this pre-polling areas are out in the islands and also in the highlands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Saneem said several teams have been tasked to carry out the pre-poll which will run for two weeks at 547 polling stations.

He added that 525,038 voters are either postal voters or they will do polling on the day of election.

According to these figures, there are 591,086 registered voters in the 2014 general elections.

The Supervisor of Elections said Police will guard the ballot boxes.
