Consumers in Fiji can now expect cheaper internet charges as the Commerce Commission has today announced that FINTEl=s bandwidth price will decrease as much as 61 percent in the next two years with a reduction of 34.6 percent from next month.
Commission Chairman Doctor Mahendra Reddy revealed this at a press conference this afternoon saying that the reduction will be seen from the 1st of next month.
The Commerce Commission has also announced today that internet service providers can now have direct access to the Southern Cross Cable.
Dr Reddy said the Commission is satisfied that access to the Southern Cross Cable is appropriate and possible to promote competition and it has therefore decided that operators can now have direct access, subject to normal commercial trading terms and conditions.
According to the Commission, on application by a third party, FINTEL is obliged to facilitate access for the landing of an operator’s capacity and the delivery of this shall be within six weeks.
Dr Reddy said this determination will make substantial contribution towards growth and development of Fiji=s economy.
He said it will also increase ICT penetration in Fiji thus allowing for ease of access to educational materials, and will reduce costs of internet access for the education and business sector, contributing to reduction in unit costs.
